Three years ago today I bought my first DSRL.
I was at a Costco in Medford, Oregon when I walked by a stack of Canon 60D's. I had been doing a lot of traveling and thought it would be nice to get a proper camera and learn basic photography. I bought the kit.
Later that night, my girlfriend (of 4 years) and I split up for good. It was a crushing day for me. I needed someplace to focus my energy.
I started by signing up for Lynda.com. They offered basic courses for understanding exposure, lenses, my Canon 60D, and more. All those courses, taught by the great @Ben Long Photography, really had an impact on me. I could actually work the camera in about a month.
My first photos were of ducks, railroad tracks, myself, and anything else I could shoot. I took my camera everywhere and shot everything. I bought Trey Ratcliff's HDR (High Dynamic Range) course and that really got me motivated. I loved his work and really took to trying my best hand at HDR. I ran around the globe for the next year or so taking 5 exposures of everything. I did HDR's in Thailand, Cambodia, Alaska, Colorado, and pretty much everywhere that was pretty. I loved it. What I didn't like was the isolation.
I like compelling looking people (fancy girls) as much as the next person, so I decided I would try shooting models. I looked on Model Mayhem for some local girls I could shoot. I remember reading one model's post in particular. Its said something like "I only shoot for a fee, unless you have a concept that I want to shoot. Then I will shoot for trade." I thought "a concept?" What does that mean?
After a year of "normal" model shoots, I was flipping through 500px one night before bed. I started saving pics into a favorites list. Once I had around 60 shots in there, I started looking to see what I liked about them that was a commonality. I noticed 4 things. 1. Shallow depth of field. 2. Concept: Brilliant and creative fashion, makeup, styling overall, and location or setting. 3. Emily Soto | Fashion Photographer 4. Amanda Diaz Photography.
Just last February (2014) I signed up for Emily's workshop in LA. That was a huge wakeup call. Amazing styling by Susan Fiori Bohn. Brilliant lighting and DOF methods. High attention to detail in post-processing. I got to see what goes into an amazing photo.
Then in May, her Grace, Amanda Diaz allowed me to come intern with her for 2 months in Edmonton, Canada. That took me even further. I was able to see the complexity, yet simplicity in her style. I was able to see how she worked and how she created her photos. It was a great gift.
Today, I am working on a new style, inspired again by some brilliant artists. I think its important to constantly evaluate our own work. To listen to the feedback from fans of your work. To move forward and create the best work possible.
So, over the coming months, you'll be seeing some new stuff from me. All delightfully inspired with the wish to tap into the highest levels of my creativity, that which flows through me.
Thanks for giving me a place to share my work.
Thanks for your likes, shares, comments, and private messages.
Thanks for going on the journey with me.

Hughes, Helen Van Pelt Smithgall -
Richard Pryde Hughes - дедушка (Richard Pryde Hughes I)
Drew -
Alison Hughes Watkins Kimport, and Dr. Meredith Bakke (Gregg) of DeForest, and Gale Andrea Edwards (Jay) of Baton Rouge, La.; a son, Richard Pryde Hughes Jr. (Sandy) of Las Vegas (Richard Pryde Hughes II)
Melanie Bryn Edwards, Kjersten Brynn Bakke and Kjell Nelson Bakke of DeForest, and Richard Pryde Hughes III and Jocelyn Pryde Hughes of San Diego
Aaron Drew Richter Watkins

Left some of my late brother Aaron's ashes in the pond at the Royal Botanic Gardens in Richmond, UK. The birds thought it was lunchtime and came around for a bite. They were disappointed to say the least. Yes, I keep his ashes in a triple ziplock.

✮✮ A sincere reflection about editing a model's features. ✮✮
So much fuss lately about how I edit photos. Then, today I saw the new Colbie Caillat video for her song "Try." I want to share my view. I hope you'll read this with an open mind.
To me, each photo I create is a piece of art. It is not exclusively about the model. The model is the subject, but my aim is to create an overall mood, not perfectly capture a photo of the model. I am not taking a headshot or a family photo. I am making an artistic statement. When I edit a photo, I adjust elements as they appeal to my eye. I might change a background, move a tree branch, fill in the sky, make a model's leg longer, make a leg thinner, change her hair color, add more hair, thin her arm, tuck her tummy, edit her skin tone, and so on. Its just what looks good to me, as an artist. It's neither right, nor wrong. If you like yellow, orange is not wrong.
Angelina Jolie does not look like the character she plays in 'Maleficent.' Her "image" has been heavily modified to look that way. These are the EXACT same kind of edits I make. No difference! The models I work with choose to work with me because they like my images. They can see I am going to make strong edits. Its obvious that when you look at most of my photos, they are not a real life images. Real life does not quite look like that. I am creating a larger than life image. In doing so, I take full creative license to edit the image as I choose.
OF COURSE, the models are lovely as they are. Nothing needs to be changed at all. Each model is perfectly themselves. Beautiful beyond measure. Truly. "Thin, fat, tall, short, white, black, yellow." You name it. PERFECT. But again, I am not just taking a photo. I am carving a vision from my minds eye, one I am entitled to create. One that is also perfect.
What I like as an artist has nothing to do with the model, per se. If I lighten her skin, its because it looks good to me in that fleeting moment. What I like says nothing about the model. Zero. What I find attractive is my own opinion, not anyone else's. It's my own view. If I think something is great, it really says nothing about the thing like, it says something about what I think is great. For example, if I don't like a song, what does that say about the song? Nothing at all. Conversely, if I love a song, it still says nothing about the qualities of the song either, only that I like it.
In the same way, when I edit how a model looks, it says nothing about the model. If the viewer wishes to be offended that I made the edit, it says something about their opinion, not me, the model, or the photo. Should I stop doing something because a person is offended? Maybe. Maybe not. It's up to me. Many Christians are offended by our lovely gay community. Many vegetarians are offended by meat eaters. There is no end to what we can be offended by. In all cases, "right" or "wrong," it's just our view. One can be as offended as they wish to be at any time.
So, if you do not like that I freely edit anything and everything in my photos, including the model's features in some cases, then please don't attack me over it. See that it is just art. If you will not grant that, please just unlike my page. It's simply a digital image and, in my view, there is no need to get so wired up and angry over it. I am not hurting anyone any more than the image of Angelina Jolie as 'Maleficent' is.
When people say "you didn't need to edit anything about the model," I suggest that nothing, and I mean NOTHING ever NEEDS to be done. We do what we feel compelled to do. As an artist, I am compelled to make the edits I make. If they resonate with you, you like my work. If not, maybe my art is best left for someone else.
Colbie Callait's new song and video is lovely. I fully resonate with it. As the same time, I'm pretty confident we'll see Colbie in makeup again. Makeup is not the issue. Fashion is not the issue. Editing is not the issue. Loving and accepting oneself is. For most, this is a lifelong journey. If one loves themselves, they sure could have a lot of fun with makeup, fashion, and editing.
I hope you can respect my view.

DEFOREST - Helen Van Pelt Smithgall Hughes, age 96, passed away at her home on Monday, Aug. 14, 2006, surrounded by the love and comfort of her family. Helen was born on April 21, 1910, in Austin, Pa., to John Daniel and Romelia (Van Pelt) Smithgall. She was a loving mother, wife, daughter and sister, an accomplished pianist and a gifted writer who, throughout her life entertained friends and family with her knowledge, talent and sense of humor. She enjoyed life to its fullest. An exceptional student, her academic excellence earned her a scholarship to Bucknell University. She epitomized the concept of lifelong learning. An avid reader and lover of words, she always had a dictionary by her side. In later years, as her eyesight diminished, she enjoyed her old movie favorites via the Tuner Classics. In an era when women had to choose between a profession and children, Helen's choice was family. She raised her four children with the same energy and dedication that she had previously put into her academics and music. She was a lover of all things beautiful, appreciated the complexities of life, and was selfless and nurturing in her relationships. She is survived by her children and grandchildren; three daughters, Alison Hughes Watkins Kimport, and Dr. Meredith Bakke (Gregg) of DeForest, and Gale Andrea Edwards (Jay) of Baton Rouge, La.; a son, Richard Pryde Hughes Jr. (Sandy) of Las Vegas; and grandchildren, Melanie Bryn Edwards, Kjersten Brynn Bakke and Kjell Nelson Bakke of DeForest, and Richard Pryde Hughes III and Jocelyn Pryde Hughes of San Diego. She was preceded in death by her beloved parents; her brother, Drew; her much loved husband, Richard Pryde Hughes; and her adored grandson, Aaron Drew Richter Watkins. We celebrate and honor the life of our mother, Helen, and are eternally grateful for her gift of life to us. The beating heart of a loving family is silent now but she will continue to speak to us through her indomitable spirit, her glorious written words, and her legacy of unconditional love.

Left some of my late brother Aaron's ashes in the pond at the Royal Botanic Gardens in Richmond, UK. The birds thought it was lunchtime and came around for a bite. They were disappointed to say the least. Yes, I keep his ashes in a triple ziplock.
